AirMax1-a-Day Galerie von Matt Stevens

Hey Matt, we were blown away by your designs. What was your motivation to do this campaign?
I am a creative director in a Brand Design firm, but my background is in illustration. I had been looking for something to do for a while to give me a chance to get back into illustration. I began to think about all the Nikes I’ve owned over the years and thought that would be cool to illustrate them all as a sort of time line or illustrated museum. I love the objects themselves, but they’re also markers about points in my life. Each shoe has a story. After I created the “shoe museum” I thought it would be fun as a daily exercise to take the AirMax1 and do a new interpretation of it everyday. As I began, I started to illustrate a series of them in the styles of some of my favorite designers and illustrators. That series lasted 2 weeks and now I’m keeping the series going with new ideas as often as I have the time to do them.

Are you a sneaker collector on your own?

I wouldn’t say I’m a collector. I’m a fan and an enthusiast. I love the Nike brand. I love what they’ve built. Not just the products but the mystique around the entire brand and message. I like to wear them and I hate dirty shoes, so once they are worn out, I move on to the next one, but I definitely don’t have a closet full of deadstock.

Are you allowed to wear sneakers all day?
As a designer and creative director, I can wear sneakers. We have a pretty relaxed environment. I’m wearing flip flops today.

Thanks Matt!
